Springtime Schola programs Ancient Gregorian chants, Renaissance masterpieces, and a few spirituals are the heart of this spring’s programs. Expect to hear chants of Hildegard von Bingen and the ancient chant sounds of Ireland. The Schola Spring 2012 season begins at the New Mexico History Museum where the Schola will again share the stage with the Monks of Christ in the Desert Monastery as part of the programming series for The Saint John's Bible and Contemplative Landscape, a project, overseen by the Benedictine monks at Saint John's Abbey in Minnesota. The Schola returns to the Loma Colorado Public Library in Rio Rancho in late March. In the spirit of Saint Patrick’s Day, plan to hear ancient chants of Ireland, along with a couple of Irish ballads. The ancient sounds of Holy Week will echo throughout the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in downtown Santa Fe on Good Friday evening in early April. The ‘Passion according to Mark’ (sung in English according to the ancient Gregorian chant tradition) will be heard on this evening. This beautiful church with its’ outstanding acoustics is the perfect setting to hear the ancient sounds of this reflective week. |

A note from the Director of the Schola In 2011 I had the great opportunity to travel to Ireland to study and sing under the direction of Michael McGlynn, director of Anúna—Ireland’s national choir. The weeklong study in Dublin culminated with a concert comprised of Anúna, chloral directors from around the world such as myself, and visiting members from the Chieftans, Riverdance, and Celtic Women. Michael is well respected for his founding of the music for Riverdance, and Anúna is respected worldwide as the finest of a capella choirs. Michael’s attention to detail on and off the stage along with his high degree of musical expertise were enlightening and motivating to me. Brining Anúna’s skills back to the Schola from my time in Ireland has been great fun. I have asked the Schola for the same request Michael makes of Anúna singers—to be willing to sing in a very different manner than we are used to, putting aside old habits and stepping up to a new level of performance. Expect to hear ancient Celtic chants as set by Michael this spring! -Billy |
